Sandy has never lived in a home. Imagine that! In her entire 7 years of life, she has never got to sit next to someone in a living room, curl up near them at night...
For the majority of her life, she lived in an outdoor enclosure that was surrounded by tarps so she could only look straight ahead. Day in and day out, she had the same view of life. Seven years passed before a concerned animal lover stumbled upon the situation and convinced her owner that Sandy deserved a better life.
Wild Dog Rescue took her in and it took Sandy a few months to learn to come to people. At first, she only warmed up to women but over time, learned to trust men and older children who approached her slowly. She learned what it was to wear a leash, to go on walks, and to be housebroken. She learned the joy of human touch, getting baths, being groomed, and just simply being by people.
She has a high prey drive, so she cannot live with cats or small dogs. She is selective about the dogs she likes too but has enjoyed the company of another dog, a larger puppy, at the rescue.
Now, 10 months has passed, and Sandy still resides at the kennel-based rescue. She has yet to have the opportunity to reside in a home. We are eager to get this sweet girl into a family. Update: Finally free from a life in a tiny outdoor kennel, Sandy is really blossoming. She has discovered the joy of living as a real dog should. One day, her neighbor at the rescue, Bennie, discovered a way to sneak into her indoor kennel. Much to our delight, Sandy really seemed happy with her new canine neighbor. In fact, the two have become quite the duo as she really seems to enjoy the company of other dogs. She is doing great with the female staff and volunteers, but new men still make her a bit skiddish. She is even learning to get along with children, as she cautiously met some of our younger volunteers. With a little more time, she will gain confidence and really become a great dog. She is looking for her first real home and her first family -- please be the one for her!
Sandy spent her whole life, all seven years, in a covered kennel, looking at the same chunk of yard. She was never allowed outside of the kennel and could never see around her, as both sides of the kennel were covered as well. She wasn't even taken on walks! Wild Dog Rescue has given her the chance to finally be free for the first time in her life. She is discovering what it is like to run free, to be pet, to see other dogs. Everything is new to her. Even after a rough life, she has the heart of a lover. She totally just leans into your legs, begging to be pet. She has no idea what it means to be a dog, wasn't walked (although walked on the slip lead beautifully!). She will need a home with patience that can help her discover the wonderful life of being a DOG!
